The Clouds novel

Description

The novel tells the story of a young psychiatrist in 1804, leading five madmen towards a psychiatric clinic from Santa Fe to Buenos Aires. They travel with a caravan of thirty-six people: madmen, prostitutes, gauchos, and a military escort, navigating chaos and overcoming obstacles of all kinds. In this pseudo-epic, set against the infinite backdrop of the pampas and viewed through the young doctor’s scientific lens, Juan José Saer plants the seeds for his narrative: his thoughts on time, space, history, and the limited reliability of the tools we rely on—consciousness and memory—to understand reality. Juan José Saer’s novel “The Clouds” was awarded the Biblioteca Breve Prize.
